The Science & Soul of Synchronicity — How the Universe Speaks When We’re Ready to Listen

Some messages don’t arrive in words. Sometimes they show up as a whisper, a repeated number, a creature crossing your path, or a moment that feels far too meaningful to be coincidence. These “synchronicities”—as Carl Jung famously called them—appear when the soul is stirring, when something in your life is shifting, or when, in the quiet places of your heart, you’ve begun asking for guidance.

My friend Margaret Feinberg describes these moments as Sacred Echoes—the themes, symbols, or signs that repeat themselves until you cannot help but take notice. Sacred Echoes arrive when God is calling you toward something… or gently reminding you that He is still near.
I’ve known those echoes intimately.
How the Universe Speaks to Me: The Signs That Saved Me
When I was at my lowest—lost, exhausted, and uncertain—God sent deer. They crossed my path again and again, as though to say, “Gentleness can still lead you forward.” Deer are creatures of quiet strength, grace, and survival. I didn’t understand it at first, but the repetition was unmistakable. Each time I saw one, I felt the smallest flicker of hope return.

Later in my journey, the signs shifted.Suddenly, doves began appearing everywhere—on walks, on signs, in art, in unexpected places. The dove carries deep Biblical symbolism: it was the dove that returned to Noah’s ark with the message that the flood was receding… that the storm was nearly over.
That was exactly what I needed to hear.

And then, there was the number 41—a number woven throughout Scripture, often marking the end of one season and the threshold of a new one. It showed up on receipts, addresses, flight numbers, clocks—over and over, like a heartbeat syncing with my next chapter.
These signs didn’t magically fix my life. But they gave me the courage to rise, to trust, and to walk forward even when I felt afraid.
But Is Synchronicity Real? The Science Behind the Magic
While the spiritual world offers its own interpretations of signs, psychology also offers fascinating insight into why these experiences feel so vivid—and so transformative.
1. Reticular Activating System (RAS): The Brain’s Focus Filter
Your brain contains a neurological filter that tunes your attention, called the reticular activating system. Once something becomes meaningful to you—a number, a symbol, a word—your RAS heightens your awareness and allows you to notice it more often.
This doesn’t diminish the spiritual meaning…It simply explains how the brain collaborates with the heart. Science says you see it because it matters. Faith says it matters because it was meant for you.

2. Meaning-Making as a Psychological Superpower
Humans are wired for meaning. We create narratives that help us move through uncertainty, grief, or change. When a symbol arrives at just the right moment, it helps anchor our emotional world and strengthen resilience.

3. Jung’s Theory of Synchronicity
Carl Jung believed that two events could be connected not by cause, but by meaning. In other words:A sign is a sign because it speaks to something inside you.
4. Neurotheology: How the Brain Experiences Spiritual Insight
Emerging research suggests that moments of perceived spiritual connection activate specific networks in the brain associated with peace, intuition, and emotional clarity.

Why Signs Matter for Our Personal Growth
Signs and synchronicities help us reconnect with ourselves. They remind us:
You are guided.
You are supported.
You are not as alone as you feel.
And you are always capable of beginning again.
Whether they appear through faith, psychology, or a divine intersection of both, these signs become milestones in our healing and our becoming.
They become the compass.
An Invitation to Pay Attention
Today’s synchronicities may be subtle—a phrase someone repeats, a song that comes on at the perfect moment, an animal that crosses your path, or a number that keeps surfacing. Is it how the universe speaks to you?
But when you start noticing them, you also start noticing yourself—your intuition, your desires, your forward motion.
And perhaps the greatest synchronicity of all is this:
When you are ready to rise, the universe rises to meet you.
